Machined Wheels

An image of various machined wheels on a red background with a gear pattern across it.

When it comes to searching for the right rims, wheel finish can be the ultimate deciding factor. And when it comes to good looks, machined wheels are frequently front and center. They are increasingly becoming a common original equipment wheel option for new vehicles.

Wheel buyers may be hesitant to pull the trigger on a set of machined wheels because they’re unsure of what they are, how to maintain them, or if they’re worth the price. We’ve taken some of the mystery out of machined rims for you.

If you’re ready to start shopping, check out our huge machined wheels catalog.

WHAT ARE MACHINED WHEELS?

Machined wheels achieve their lustre by removing a thin surface layer while spinning to expose a shiny, smooth surface below. A clear sealant coat is applied to protect against corrosion.

An excellent example of a machined wheel for your truck is the KMC KM235 Grenade Crawl Beadlock. The beadlock bolts and geometric cutouts really stand out against this brilliant finish. For a simpler, more classic machined look with a modular face, check out the American Outlaw Dune.

Got a passenger car? The Vӧxx Capo offers stylish, spiffy aesthetics with a brilliant machined finish.

Like any wheel finish option, this is entirely a matter of opinion. They offer a lightweight, unique aesthetic with the shiny metal finish and custom styling many prefer for their rims. When cared for, machined rims are very durable.

However, they tend to show every speck of dust and dirt. Depending on the machining process, it may have visible lines on the surface. Finally, it can be difficult or expensive to repair them as it requires specialized tools and machinery.

Machined wheels can be repaired by professionals using specialized equipment and then re-coated. However, it may be impossible to get the exact look as when brand new. It will also probably be expensive because of the complex machinery used.

Machined wheels can be cleaned like other wheels. Use a soft brush or sponge and a non-abrasive, mild cleaner. You can use a long wheel brush for those hard to reach spots inside the rim. Dry with a soft cloth to help prevent spots. Finish with a protective coating such as wax. Do not clean your wheels when they’re hot.

We cover how to clean wheels here.

Yes, you can polish machined wheels to a mirror finish. There are several methods you can use, including polishing compounds, sandpaper, lap polishing machine, and media blasting.

BLACK MACHINED RIMS

Black wheels are a booming business for wheel manufacturers and it’s no surprise that black machined rims are right up there, too. The contrast between black paint and the machined shiny finish is striking and appealing. You can often see them as original equipment rims on newer vehicles, including trucks.

A good example of black machined rims for your truck are the Method Race Wheels MR305 NV. The contrast between the simulated beadlock lip, machine face and black barrel is eye-catching to say the least.

For your passenger vehicle, car or crossover, take a look at the Petrol P6A, available in 17–19’’ fitments to upgrade any ride. We also like the Sport Tuning ST8 which offers a directional spoke machined finish for a modern take.
