Discount Tire began in 1960, when founder Bruce T. Halle opened a single store in Ann Arbor, Michigan with just six tires and a simple promise: treat people right and do the right thing, every time. From personally hauling a portable air tank to inflate customers’ tires to handling every role in the shop, Bruce set a service-first standard that still guides us today.
Over the decades, we expanded thoughtfully—moving west in the 1970s and growing across California, the Pacific Northwest, Texas, Florida, and beyond. By 1990, we reached more than 200 stores; by 2000, more than 400. Today, we are a leading independent retailer of tires and wheels with 1,200+ stores in 39 states. We plan our growth responsibly, scouting each location in person to ensure our stores can succeed and our people can thrive in their communities.
