TRAILER TIRE MAINTENANCE

Like your automobile tires, keeping your trailer tires in tip top shape keeps them healthy, working for longer, and safer.

In general, you should:

Overloading and underinflation are serious issues when it comes to both auto and trailer tires. They affect not only your trailer’s performance but your and other drivers’ safety.

Check out our blog on safely maintaining your trailer tires for more in-depth information.

BOAT TRAILER TIRES

Considering how large, heavy, and expensive your boat is, you should take special care to choose the right boat trailer tires for your needs. And the unique conditions boat trailer tires encounter also add to the concerns. Some things you need to think about when choosing boat trailer tires:

  • Tire size: check your owner’s manual or look at your current tires for the right size. Make sure they match your trailer wheels and manufacturer’s specs.

  • Boat weight: find your boat’s weight and trailer when fully loaded so you can choose tires that can handle the total weight.

  • Tire type: Choose ST (Special Trailer) tires as they are engineered to handle heavy loads, offer improved water performance, and resist heat buildup.

  • Maintenance: keeping your tires as healthy as possible keeps them rolling for longer (and more safely).

Keep in mind that a long period of exposure to moisture, especially saltwater, can lead to premature wear and damage. Keep your boat trailer tires from being submerged or parked in moist areas (such as grass) for extended periods of time. Regularly inspect your tires for damage, proper inflation, and treadwear.

Luckily, most trailer tires available should cover the majority of your boat hauling needs.

The Goodyear Endurance and the Hartland ST Radial are popular boat trailer tire choices thanks to their heavy-duty construction, resistance to overheating, and high speed rating allowances.

RV TRAILER TIRES

Not all America's Tire stores are equipped to handle your recreational vehicle. Check out our page on commercial tire installation locations to see where we can service your RV.

Although they may look similar, RV trailer tires are not the same as auto tires. They experience significantly heavier loads that accelerate wear. They also tend to be used for longer trips than the family car, so they can potentially see more miles. However, they are made more robustly with coatings to help protect against UV rays and other environmental agitations.

Since RVs come in a wide range of sizes, so too do their tires. Some larger RV trailers utilize commercial sized tires, typically in 19.5’’ sizes. Our favorites? We like the Mohave HD 1960, a versatile all-position tire designed for medium-duty commercial vehicles. The long tread life, impressive wet traction, and durability are some of its best features.

If you have a preference for Michelin tires, then check out the Agilis HD All-Season for your RV. Well protected against scrubbing and offering choice performance in all-seasons, the Agilis HD All-Season continues to perform consistently even as it wears down.

Working with a budget? Our exclusive Yokohama YK-HDX tire offers excellent service, rugged construction, and construction-grade durability. It also includes a 50k mileage warranty and comes at a great price point.

If your RV van chassis takes LT or Euro sizes, we recommend looking at the Pathfinder HSR. An America's Tire exclusive, it offers a confident and comfortable long-lasting ride. With treadwear resistant carbon-black enhanced tread and backed by a 50,000-mile warranty, its price point is just the icing on the cake!

If you want a more premium, all-weather option to avoid seasonal tire swapping, check out the Michelin Agilis CrossClimate2. It sports CurbGuard™ construction and reinforced sidewalls to protect against curbing. Plus, Michelin’s StabiliBlok tech yields high-strength and reduced tread movement under heavy loads for longer, even, and consistent performance and treadwear.
