If you live in a region with distinct seasons and weather, you probably use all-season tires the majority of the time. Maybe you even try to eke out winters with them. But there is another safer and economical solution: all-weather tires.
(Were you actually looking for all-season or winter tires?)
WHAT ARE ALL-WEATHER TIRES?
All-weather tires are a hybrid tire that functions in all seasons, including mild and non-extreme winter conditions. They work well in both warm or cool temperatures. They can be used for a longer timespan (longer into a winter season), compared to all-season tires.
We compare all-season tires and all-weather tires at length here but in short, all-weather tires have:
Superior handling in wet conditions
Noticeably better traction in snow, ice, and slush
Enhanced tread compounds for flexibility in a range of temps
Potential trade off in ride quality, noise, and handling sharpness
We expect these potential compromises to lessen as the tire category broadens and more brands include them in their catalogs.
Note: all-weather tires cannot replace a dedicated set of winter tires. They cannot cope with true winter conditions.
Despite performing better than all-season tires in winter, all-weather tires cannot effectively handle temperatures under 45F and severe winter conditions.
States in the south or southwest may consider this a perfect year-round option due to their wide range of utility. But if you live in an area with a true winter season and severe weather, like heavy snow, slick ice, and temperatures consistently below 45F, we recommend shopping from our list of the best winter tires.
If you want to learn more about different tire types, we cover the differences between all-season, summer, and winter tires here.
Best All-Weather Tires
The all-weather tire category is relatively new and manufacturers are still working on defining category qualifications. This means there’s no standardized naming convention yet, making shopping for these tires a little challenging. Here are a few clues:
“AW” or “Weather” in the name
Heavy snow and ice tread features

While many all-weather tires carry the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol (3PMSF) or an M+S (mud and snow) rating, they are not a substitute for winter tires in climates that experience prolonged or extreme periods of snow, ice, or true winter temperatures.
In these areas, you’ll want a winter tire with a tread compound formulated to stay flexible and maintain its grip in temperatures consistently at or below 45F.
But, if you’re primarily driving in a moderate climate that may have occasional snow or low temps (or perhaps you’re a regular visitor to cold weather areas), most all-weather tires will be up to the task.
