Overloading occurs when a vehicle or trailer's weight exceeds its tires' load-carrying capacity. In other words, overloading is when your tires are carrying more weight than they can safely handle.
Underinflation is when a tire's air pressure is too low to support the weight of the vehicle.
Overloading and underinflated tires are the main causes of tire blowouts and failures.

Overinflation
Underinflated or overloaded tires can't grip driving surfaces properly, leading to poor handling, vehicle instability and reduced fuel economy. In addition, overloading and underinflation lead to heat build up in the sidewall and tread area, potentially causing serious problems. The more an overloaded/underinflated tire is driven on, the higher the heat build up which can cause structural components to break down and lead to tire failure.
A tire professional should inspect a tire that has been driven for extended periods while overloaded and/or underinflated. The professional will inspect it for related damage or deformation and if any is found, it should be removed from service immediately and replaced.

How to Avoid Underinflation and Overloading
Check your tire's air pressure regularly. We recommend checking your air pressure at least once a month. Always check before a long drive or trip.
Your tires' maximum inflation and load-carrying capacity can be found on their sidewalls. Do note that this measure is the maximum inflation and not necessarily the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle. The recommended air pressure can almost always be found on the driver's side door placard. You can also check the glove compartment or the owner's manual.
You can always have America's Tire check your air pressure for you. We offer complimentary tire air pressure checks. We will even inflate and inspect them for free!
