Understanding ATV/UTV Tire Sizing

Line of ATVs driving on an unpaved desert road

Installing the right sized tires is important for ATV/UTV performance and handling. You need to make sure you're adding the correct size when replacing your original equipment (OE) tires.

HOW TO READ ATV/UTV TIRE SIZES

Although ATV and UTV tires look similar in size to car tires, they are not quite the same.

For example, a common size may be:

25/10.00D12

This breaks down to:

25 = the overall height of the tire in inches at its proper operating air pressure

10.00 = the width of the tire in inches when inflated to the proper operating air pressure

D = the tire's construction type

12 = the wheel size

Truck or car tires likely wouldn't fit on a UTV or ATV without serious modifications. This Is because the bolt pattern on car wheels and ATV/UTV wheels is different and would require expensive modifications to make them fit each other. Truck tires would also be too large to fit. Car tires are also almost exclusively radial construction, while ATV and UTV tires can be either radial or bias ply construction. UTV or ATV tires are also designed for rough, off-road performance not suitable for most car tire designs.

ATV/UTV tires have either a bias ply or a radial construction. They are designated by letters in the tire size. D, as in this example above, is a bias ply construction and R is a radial construction.

CHANGING YOUR ATV/UTV TIRES

It's pretty common to increase your tire size when replacing original equipment (OE) tires. Larger tires increase ground clearance and give your vehicle a more aggressive appearance. However, you must maintain proper spacing between the tires, the suspension and the fenders.

If you are not the original owner, the previous owner may have modified the tire size. It is important to know the OE tire size before making the decision to increase the tire size. This is because an increase in tire size means an increase in diameter or even weight which may cause mechanical issues. If you do decide to go up in size, we recommend an increase no greater than one inch to the height or width. Larger increases will mean serious adjustments to your suspension and modifications like this can change the handling and performance of your vehicle.

Only higher horsepower machines (900cc or more) should consider larger tire size replacements. Understanding which type of ATV/UTV tire and buying the right ATV/UTV tire for you are imperative for safety and performance.
